We are amateur musicians based in Plymouth who enjoy playing and listening to Celtic music. The group has grown to more than a dozen and we are beginner friendly. We hold sessions in pubs at least once every month and we practice at the Millfields Trust HQ building on Union Street.
What is a session?
A session isn’t a band, a concert or an open mic night so what is it? A session is an informal gathering of musicians for the purpose of celebrating their common interest in a style of music. This usually involves traditional tunes and songs. The music is normally played in a pub, sat at tables rather than on a stage and usually doesn’t involve any form of payment outside the occasional free beer. The music is made by and for the musicians and the audience are generally not obliged to keep quiet or even respond to the music.
Although sessions can develop spontaneously they are normally booked in advance and the pub will usually reserve a few tables for the players and may advertise the event (It wise to advertise it as an Irish session and not as a band to avoid confusion).
